Let’s discover the influences of La Sonora Mazurén, who will showcase their afro-latin music on the Parrote Stage on October the 26 :
« The world has always been connected through music, like an alive organism that connects us all and refuses to die surviving wars, natural catastrophes, pandemic events, economical and political crises. Far from disappearing, music seems to strengthen its forms being reinvented every time like an infinite resource. Music has traveled back and forth through countries and it has merged cultures one time after another since the beginning of civilization, the word music means fusion by itself. And so has been the case between Africa and Latin America. These two continents have nourished each other’s cultures for a long time.
Since the Spanish and Portuguese invasion and colony of Latin America there have been uncountable musical exchanges between countries like Angola, Nigeria, Mali, Cabo Verde, Senegal and countries like Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela to mention just a few. During 3 centuries of invasion over 11 million of africans were taken to La Habana and Cartagena. 11 million from all over Africa brought by europeans to a continent where there was indigenous people already. Imagine the power of those cultures colliding.
Afro-Latin American music kept evolving and expanding since then. But in the 60´s 70´s it reaches an explosion of creativity and richness that captures the raw essence of all cultures together. Unstoppable african drumming, electrifying guitars, hallucinating keyboards… That is what influences the sound of La Sonora Mazurén, that hypnotic trance that allows you to free yourself and make you dance that comes from rituals, rhythm and psychedelia. » La Sonora Mazurén
