Walk-conference “The historic Arab Paris”
On the occasion of the National Days of Architecture, the Arab World Institute invites you to participate in an architectural and urban walk, in the heart of the 5th arrondissement.
This walk-conference in the 5th arrondissement allows to take the measure of the privileged links between the Arab world and France. The IMA is the starting point of the walk, which ends at the Grand Mosque of Paris.
The path
A journey in four stages, lasting about 3 hours, full of discoveries:
- The IMA, whose mission is to make the Arab world known, is the starting point. Its building with contemporary architecture expresses the dialogue between Western and Arab cultures.
- The visit continues in front of the Collège de France and the Sorbonne, to evoke the first teachings of Arabic under the reign of Francis I and, in the 18th century and under the Empire, the French curiosity for the East.
- Then, in front of one of the oldest churches in Paris, Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre, we will evoke the places of worship of the Arab Christians of France.
- We will recall the attraction exerted by Paris on the Arab world, the presence in the district of reformers and Arab scholars in the 19th century, and the debates of ideas that agitated them. It was here that the first printing houses, the first newspapers in Arabic language of France were born. Today’s Arab bookstores are its heirs.
- The walk ends with a visit to the Mosquée de Paris.
Look out! It is a walk in the streets of Paris. Not all spaces are accessible to wheelchair users.
