\u00ab<\/span> The Grammy award-winning Mexican singer gives a spine-tingling performance of this classic Latin-American ballad, covered by the likes of other luminary artists such as Chavela Vargas, Joan Baez, Lhasa de Sela and Lila Downs.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n

4. Piers Faccini - <\/strong>All Aboard<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>Shapes of the Fall)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> Moroccan \u201cmaalem\u201d Abdelkebir Merchane and American singer-songwriter Ben Harper join the musical polymath Piers Faccini on this Gnawa groove-heavy song.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n

5. Arooj Aftab - <\/strong>Mohabbat<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>Vulture Prince)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> The Pakistan-born, New York-based singer\u2019s third album features this beautiful \u201cghazal\u201d \u2013 a transportive and minimalist song that showcases Aftab\u2019s beguiling vocals. <\/em><\/p>\n

6. Lakou Mizik &<\/span> Joseph Ray - <\/strong>Lamiz\u00e8 Pa Dous<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>Leave the Bones)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> The Haitian collective join forces with the electronic producer Joseph Ray on their latest album that includes this song featuring the soaring and haunting vocals of Nadine Remy.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n

7. San Salvador - <\/strong>Fai Sautar<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>La Grande Folie)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> The debut album from the Occitan sextet is definitely one of my albums of the year and this track and quirky video serves as a reminder of what an exciting live act they are. I can\u2019t wait for them to come to the UK<\/span> and perform!<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n

8. Rhiannon Giddens &<\/span> Francesco Turrisi - <\/strong>Calling Me Home<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>Calling Me Home)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> Giddens and her partner Turrisi give a beautifully moving rendition of this meditation on death, originally written by American bluegrass singer Alice Gerrard.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n

9. Les Filles de Illighadad - <\/strong>Inssegh Inssegh<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>At Pioneer Works)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> Fronted by Fatou Seidi Ghali, one of the first professional female Touareg guitarists, Les Filles de Illighadad provide a refreshing take on the desert blues sound, so often dominated by male bands. <\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n

10. Toumani Diabat\u00e9 &<\/span> the LSO<\/span> - <\/strong>Mamadou Kanda Keita<\/strong><\/em> (album <\/strong>K\u00f4r\u00f4l\u00e9n)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/span> Mali\u2019s kora maestro Toumani Diabat\u00e9 joins forces with the London Symphony <\/em>Orchestra for this special album recorded live in 2008 at the Barbican in London.
