Ladysmith Black Mambazo [Official Audio]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J3rOq9lYjeQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before his international success, which has been cemented by his latest offering<em>&nbsp;Love, Damini&nbsp;<\/em>(2022), Burna spent years experimenting with different sounds in London and South Africa and his ragga-inspired vocal style became distinctive.<\/p>\n<p>His 2014 contribution to South African hip hop mainstay <span class=\"caps\">AKA<\/span>\u2019s infectious song&nbsp;<em>All Eyes on Me<\/em>&nbsp;first put him on the African radar. His smouldering hook on the multiple award-winning track made all the difference and demonstrated he was an artist to watch, channelling both West African and Jamaican musical flavours.<\/p>\n<div id=\"title\" class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-metadata\">\n<p class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-metadata\"><strong><span class=\"caps\">AKA<\/span> - <em>All Eyes on Me ft. Burna Boy, Da L.E.S., <span class=\"caps\">JR<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<iframe title=\"AKA - All Eyes on Me ft. He had to return to his native Nigeria to attain the level of success he obviously yearned: awards, global tours and A-class industry connections.<\/p>\n<p>Although he rose in a whirlwind, with an enigmatic combination of singing styles and influences, Burna Boy has, at least for the moment, become mainstream; a slightly compliant agent of the commercial music industry. (The same is true of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auxsons.com\/en\/focus\/5-afrobeats-watch-out-for-the-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most of today\u2019s Afrobeats stars<\/a><\/strong>, even if this is a Faustian truth everyone might choose to ignore.)<\/p>\n<p>On<em> Love, Damini<\/em> (he was born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu) Burna still exudes just the right amount of foreboding and palpable intrigue to remain credible as an artist. But how much of his much-touted originality does he have left? Perhaps a way to begin to answer this question is to revisit his musical influences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotting his influences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is difficult not to love club bangers such as&nbsp;<em>Soke,&nbsp;Ye,&nbsp;Gbona<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>On the Low<\/em>, all produced before Burna Boy\u2019s groundbreaking 2021 Grammy win with his fifth album,&nbsp;<em>Twice as Tall<\/em>&nbsp;(2020).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Burna Boy -&nbsp;<em>Ye<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<iframe title=\"Burna Boy - Ye [Official Music Video]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lPe09eE6Xio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In most of these songs, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auxsons.com\/en\/focus\/what-fela-kuti-has-to-do-with-west-africas-growing-pop-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fela Kuti\u2019s influence is crystal clear<\/a><\/strong> in samples and the unequivocal lifting of various hooks. For many, it seemed like Burna was Kuti\u2019s heir apparent.<\/p>\n<p>From the late 1960s Nigerian musician and singer Kuti, along with his amazing bands, almost single-handedly pioneered a genre called&nbsp;Afrobeat. This sound incorporated strong Pan Africanist politics, intricate call and response singing, and heavy West African drumming laced with enticing jazz and funk riffs.&nbsp;Afrobeats is an umbrella term for a more radio-friendly and commercial version of Kuti\u2019s Afrobeat. <em>(editor\u2019s note : for more on this subject, check out our article \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auxsons.com\/en\/focus\/5-afrobeats-watch-out-for-the-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afrobeats: watch out for the&nbsp;S!<\/a><\/strong>\u201d on differences between afrobeat and afrobeats)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Burna Boy\u2019s Kuti credentials appear impeccable. His maternal grandfather, the broadcaster and jazz enthusiast Benson Idonije, had&nbsp;managed&nbsp;Kuti in the 1960s. In one&nbsp;interview, his mother and manager, business woman Bose Ogulu, reportedly refers to Kuti as the closest thing she had to a godfather.<\/p>\n<p>Burna has also been influenced by ragga, dub and grime ever since his days as a student in the <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span>. The foundations of these genres were laid mainly in Jamaica but found fresh creative wings in urban <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> music scenes. This culminated in a hit like Burna\u2019s 2017 song&nbsp;<em>Rock your Body<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Burna Boy - <em>Rock your Body<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<iframe title=\"Burna Boy - Rock Your Body\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xho39TPlL4Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even before the arrival of <em>Love, Damini<\/em>, Burna Boy had succeeded in melding his diverse cultural and sonic experiences into one powerful aural&nbsp;stew.<\/p>\n<p>Burna has not only cribbed the Jamaican sound. He\u2019s also adopted the rude boy persona with tales of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/burna-boy-faces-police-probe-for-the-second-time-in-six-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">private security gunshots<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailytrust.com\/burna-boy-shatta-wale-and-rape-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rape allegations<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and a trail of broken hearts that have clouded his already threatening aura.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ways to weigh&nbsp;Burna<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, Burna was aiming to act as some kind of generational spokesperson for a restless and burgeoning&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2012\/02\/17\/world\/africa\/who-are-afropolitans\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afropolitan<\/a> brigade. It couldn\u2019t have been otherwise after being fed on a diet of Kuti-inspired Pan Africanism and neocolonial resistance. By most standards, this is heavy stuff for a market and generation captured by instant gratification.<\/p>\n<p>And then he struck musical gold with his eclectic brew of West African rhythms, West Indian jungle grooves and the ubiquity of hip hop. Burna once&nbsp;described&nbsp;part of this gumbo as \u201cpepperoni pizza\u201d with Kuti\u2019s Afrobeat as the dough. There is nothing particularly unique about this recipe. Instead, the X factor can be found in his own winning combination of ingredients \u2013 bound with an arresting personality. Of course, there\u2019s also his amazing dexterity in sampling to ponder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"Burna Boy - Serving Up Afrofusion with \u201cAfrican Giant\u201d  | The Daily Show\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fa6DweKPf1A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He has&nbsp;proclaimed&nbsp;that his brand of music is a new genre called Afrofusion. Probably this is just a way of leveraging newfound success for greater effect. A way to distinguish himself from the teeming throng of Afrobeats aspirers.<\/p>\n<p>To the undiscerning, Burna Boy\u2019s sound is pure genius. But for those conversant with Kuti, with Jamaican godfather of dub,&nbsp;Lee \u201cScratch\u201d Perry, and similar genres of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamaicansmusic.com\/learn\/origins\/toasting\">Caribbean toasting<\/a>&nbsp;(lyrical chanting over dancehall music), it all seems a bit d\u00e9j\u00e0&nbsp;vu.<\/p>\n<p>There are different ways to weigh Burna. If we put him against Kuti, Perry and the greats of dub, he is arguably minor. But in an incessantly Instagrammed era, endlessly photographed and reproduced, he is a giant bristling with substance, creative menace and yet to be decoded signification.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Burna was birthed from robust foundations of Afrobeat, hip hop, ragga, grime, drum \u2018n\u2019 bass and dub-related sounds. There are hardly any other foundations as deep as these. His work, up till now, has mainly consisted of translating and reconfiguring those jungle-laden sounds for a mass audience.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, he is a faithful conduit, a vehicle for simmering, unadulterated and quasi-spiritual grooves. Sometimes, it isn\u2019t even certain that Burna recognises the depth of what he is channelling. If he did, he wouldn\u2019t be so eager to pair up with every hot music star that pops up on the&nbsp;scene.<\/p>\n<p>Burna\u2019s lyrics in hits such as&nbsp;<em>Last Last<\/em> (2022) are replete with profanity, inanity and nonsense rhymes that sound good to the ears especially if you happen not to understand West African <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auxsons.com\/focus\/nigeria-aux-racines-de-la-naija-pop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>pidgin<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. This is yet another aspect of his work that can be quite bewildering; the sudden swings between sense and nonsense, pseudo-philosophical gravity and outright puerility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Burna Boy - <em>Last Last<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<iframe title=\"Burna Boy - Last Last [Official Music Video]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/421w1j87fEM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rolling in dollars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lately, Burna has launched a campaign to gain even greater success. Just look at his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auxsons.com\/en\/focus\/questioning-world-music-todays-world-musicians-are-forming-the-backbone-of-western-pop-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high profile collaborations with the likes of <span class=\"caps\">US<\/span> musicians<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;Pop Smoke&nbsp;and&nbsp;Beyonc\u00e9&nbsp;as well as <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> pop stars like&nbsp;Sam Smith,&nbsp;Ed Sheeran&nbsp;and&nbsp;Stormzy&nbsp;or Nigerian singer&nbsp;Wizkid.<\/p>\n<div id=\"title\" class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-metadata\">\n<p class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-metadata\"><strong>Burna Boy -<em> B. But perhaps this hardly matters as long as the dollars, brand endorsements and festival invitations keep rolling in.
