The album ends with an instrumental piece, <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em>, related to the tradition of several peoples from Eastern Anatolia and Mesopotamia, for the end of the year. <em>As 2023 will end soon, I talked with Ali to get deeper into this&nbsp;piece.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"title\" class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-metadata\">\n<p class=\"style-scope ytd-watch-metadata\"><strong>Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f - <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<iframe title=\"Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f \/ Khalo Ga\u011fun\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nSdr4xqXXYw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Araceli Tzigane:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>The last piece of your album <em>Ki\u011f\u0131<\/em> is <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em>, that is translated as the \u201c<em>Elder of Winter<\/em>\u201d. You told me that this piece is related to a tradition of the end of the year for your community. I have several questions. Which people celebrates this festivity? I mean, it is related to Kurdish people in general or with Alevis or with all the peoples in a specific geographical region?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>This tradition has existed in different geographies for different purposes. It is known to date back to the pagan period in Anatolia and Mesopotamia. Anatolian Christians associate it with St. Nicholas.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h5><strong>Araceli Tzigane:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Is this music used nowadays, in the real context (I mean, in any ritual use, not just for the art itself)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Today it has a purely symbolic meaning.&nbsp;For example, Alevi Kurds associate this tradition with their sacred figure X\u0131z\u0131r. The beginning of the Alevi religious calendar begins with Ga\u011fun on December 21.<\/p>\n<p>Arabs and Laz also continue this tradition, albeit symbolically. However, this tradition is most widespread in Dersim and its surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>This is the melody people in my village used to play for Khalo Ga\u011fun.&nbsp; And today it\u2019s almost never used. It\u2019s just simple repetitions played on the drum. It is the Kurdish Alevis who keep Ga\u011fun alive in music. At least as far as I know, only Alevis use it in music. So far I have heard three different melodies related to Khalo Ga\u011fun and they are all different.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h5><strong>Araceli Tzigane:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Where did you learn the melody from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I heard this melody in 2009 during the Khalo Ga\u011fun celebrations in Esenyal\u0131, Istanbul. My uncle was playing this melody with his tembur.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h5><strong>Araceli Tzigane:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Are there other melodies or songs related to <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Yes, there is it. Dersim Alevis have another melody that they play in a different form, mostly accompanied by the dahol and zurna. In H\u0131n\u0131s, Erzurum, another melody is used for <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em>. They all resemble each other in&nbsp;form.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h5><strong>Araceli Tzigane:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>How did you work on the arrangements of <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em> in the album? Is it very close to the traditional sound?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I wanted to be as close as possible to the original melody in the arrangements. One of the rawest arrangements on the album is for <em>Khalo Ga\u011fun<\/em>. I only added short passages of the same scale to that melody.
