Newroz - the arrival of spring and new year in Kurdish culture - will take place on the 21st of March. Ferid Demirel, editor of Bianet Kurd\u00ee, shares with us a list of songs usually sung around Newroz. This list was originally published in Bianet<\/a>, on 21st March 2019 and it is republished now on #AuxSons with their permission.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n There are several strans (songs) sung about Newroz in the Kurmanji, Sorani and Kirmashani dialects of Kurdish. We have compiled some of these songs for you on the occasion of Newroz celebrated each year on March 21 !<\/p>\n When one thinks about Newroz and songs (strans<\/em>) sung about Newroz, it is usually the famous song of Newroz<\/em> by Hesen Z\u00eerek, which comes to mind first. Composed based on a poem by Kurdish poet P\u00eerem\u00eard, this song has come to be sung and listened in Newroz for years.<\/p>\n There are, of course, several other songs composed and sung about Newroz. When I set out to compile the songs about Newroz, I thought that I could find around 20 songs, though I was not sure about the exact number. However, when I compiled all the songs that I could find, I realized that there were more than 71 strans.<\/em> Only a very few of them are different versions of the same song sung by different people.<\/p>\n Almost all of these musicians underline national, cultural and political statements in their songs on Newroz. However, Ciwan Haco can be considered an exception. In his song Bida<\/em> that he sang in his album D\u00fbri<\/em> in 1994, Haco has combined the theme of love with Newroz.<\/p>\n Though the song Newroz<\/em> by Hesen Z\u00eerek comes to mind first, I would like to place another song on the top of my list: The song Newroz<\/em> by Kurdish rapper Xem that he sings in his brand new album Biyan.<\/em><\/p>\n Here is quite a long youtube playlist<\/strong><\/a> for you.
